What do you do in case of an emergency?

If you have reasons to suspect that a person is at risk of suicide, the normal procedure would be to call the police on telephone number 199. An MWO or Mental Welfare Officer will be called in to help the sufferer. It might be the case that under Gibraltar law, the sufferer will be sectioned under the Mental Health Act section 9 where the patient will be hospitalised for 24 hours under medical supervision. After 24 hours has elapsed, it might be necessary for further treatment either voluntarily by the patient or if not co operating but is seen prudent by medical practitioners that the patient is still at risk, put under section 5 or section 6 by the Mental health act. The differences between section 5 and 6 is the duration that the patient is witheld in the psychiatric hospital, who can section the patient and the patient has rights to apply for a mental health tribunal to revoke the section. It might also be the case that the patient no longer needs treatment and is sent home with follow up appointments to see mental health practitioners either at the community mental health team or CMHT or the primary care centre.
